ROCKY MOUNT — Depending on one’s perspective, the pressure may at last be off for the Fike High varsity volleyball team.
Senior Laura Bland posted a double-double with 16 kills and 15 digs and junior setter Riley Bane had 25 assists, but the Golden Demons were presented with their first loss in 18 matches Thursday following a 16-25, 26-24, 15-25, 25-23, 15-11 loss to Rocky Mount in 3-A Big East Conference play.
Fike dropped to 7-1 in conference play entering the regular season’s final week, beginning with a home test against Northern Nash on Tuesday. A meeting with crosstown archrival Hunt awaits Thursday.
“It was heartbreaking,” second-year Fike head coach Cassie Blackmon said. “My girls, they were really devestated, but you have to give credit where credit is due. (Rocky Mount) worked very hard.”
In the pivotal fifth game, Fike quickly found itself on the ropes as the Gryphons sprinted out to a 9-0 lead. The Demons engineered a 9-2 run to pull within two at 11-9, but Rocky Mount held on for the victory.
Blackmon suggested that the pressure of the “streak” took its toll on the Demons.
“My girls were playing not to lose instead of playing to win,” Blackmon said. “I think my girls are ready now.”
Senior Breyonna Brown had 12 digs and nine kills. Classmate Corrie Glover tallied eight digs, while another senior, Teshera Jones, compiled four blocks.
Now placed in an unfamiliar position, Blackmon was optimistic that her charges would rebound quickly against the Knights.
“This is going to really prove the character of my players,” she said. “I really think this is a blessing in disguise for them.”
