Hunt loses tight match to Rocky Mount, 6-3

ROCKY MOUNT — The Hunt High varsity girls tennis team put forth a gritty effort on the road Wednesday, but host Rocky Mount was still able to capture four of the six contested singles matches to send the Lady Warriors to a 6-3 3-A Big East Conference loss.

The Lady Warriors, facing the No. 9 state-ranked 3-A program as cited by N.C. High School Tennis Coaches Association, picked up victories at Nos 2 and 6 singles, with Rebekah Craven and Emma Lantz emerging victorious. At No. 3 doubles, the tandem of Emily Batchelor-Megan Parker turned back Rocky Mount’s Mary Blair Thompson-Allison Binkley 8-4.

Lantz, at No. 6 singles, pushed past Binkley in a third-set tiebreaker 10-6, while at No. 3 singles, Staisha Cain extended Rocky Mount’s Chandler Brice to a deciding session before falling 10-2. At No. 4, Hunt senior Olivia Ingram suffered her first loss.

Hunt observes a brief respite from conference play Monday, hosting county rival Beddingfield.
