Home » Girls' Tennis NewsRocky Mount girls tennis now 4-0August 31, 2012 Rocky Mount High SchoolRocky Mount's girls tennis team improved to 4-0 on the year with a 7-2 victory over Eastern Wayne at home Tuesday.
The Warriors got of the gate with early wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles.
But the Gryphons roared back to go 7-0 the rest of the match to demolish Eastern Wayne.
"I think we played well in singles from 1 to 6 yesterday,," said Rocky Mount head coach Barry Nethercutt. "We really moved well and also dictated points early. Despite the losses for Mackenzie (Weaver) and Tanner (Brice), I think they both made things very difficult for their opponants and I like the way they are playing.
"Mary Blair (Thompson) and Samantha (Whicker) are unbeaten in singles and will be a vital part of our success this year - giving us good depth," Nethercutt said. "Our doubles teams continue to get better and I hope we can attack even more than we are doing. I think that will come with more time, but right now, we are 11-1 in doubles matches. So we know we can win a lot of close matches with our doubles play."
Next up is a huge Big East Conference match with defending champion Nash Central on Sept. 4. NCHS is ranked No. 3 in the state in the latest N.C.High School Tennis Coaches Association 3-A girls poll, while the Gryphons are ranked eighth.
