Nash County trio headed to Greensboro

May 29, 2012
By Charles Alston of Rocky Mount High School

Two Rocky Mount athletes and one Nash Coounty coach have been selected to participate in the N.C. Coaches Association East-West All-Star Girls Basketball Game in Greensboro on Monday, July 16.

Rocky Mount seniors Tia Hudgins and Alexus Cooper will join Nash Central head girls coach Terri Cash on the East squad. Cash will be an assistant for the team when it hits the Greensboro Coliseum floor.

Cash will join Northern Nash's Grover Battle, Rocky Mount's Pam Gainey, ex-Southern Nash coach Rosalie Ellis and former RMHS head coach and ex-principal Judy Bradshaw as Nash County girls' coaches who have also served in the All-Star Game. Battle was chosen as an assistant for the 2009 football All-Star game.

Hudgins, who was recently selected as Rocky Mount's Female Athlete of the Year, helped lead the Lady Gryphons to a 26-4 record and a berth in the NCHSAA 3-A East Regional finals. The four-year starter, who concluded her career with 1,279 points, scored 14.0 points a game (second on the team) and pulled down 8.6 rebounds per contest to lead the team.

The four-time All-Conference performer also played in the Carolinas NC-SC All-Star Girls Basketball Game in South Carolina back in March.

Cooper, who ironically played for Cash at Nash Central before transferring to Rocky Mount after her sophomore season, had a solid campaign as Rocky Mount's third scoring option. Cooper, who also participated in the Carolinas All-Star Game, scored 10 points a contest and pulled down four rebounds a game while dishing out 2.4 assists an outing. Cooper missed her junior season of action with a knee injury. She was an All-Big East Conference selection this past season.

Cash led her team to a 13-10 record last season - one that ended with a second-round NCHSAA 3-A playoff loss to then-unbeaten West Craven.
