Late goal knocks Gryphons out of playoffs

Jacksonville soccer teams have been the bane of Nash County teams’ existences in the past few playoffs.

When Rocky Mount High clawed its way to even with a talented Jacksonville White Oak squad, the Gryphons needed one fortunate moment to end the recent trend and break through to the third round.

Instead, the break went the other way. The Vikings notched a back-breaking tally in the 79th minute in their 2-1 victory against the Gryphons in the NCHSAA 3-A second round Thursday at Rocky Mount High School.

“You hate to see your season end, but it was a fierce battle between two good teams,” Rocky Mount coach Drew Nick said. “It’s unfortunate for us, but somebody has to win.”
