BAILEY – After nearly 20 years without a four-event conference winner on the boys’ side, the task seemed almost impossible.
But after nearly two decades – 18 years to the collective memory of the Big East Conference coaches – two runners nearly pulled off the feat Wednesday night at the Big East Conference track and field championship at Southern Nash High School.
Moments after Southern Nash’s Sextus Vane missed out on the feat – possibly because of a lane violation – Rocky Mount High long-distance runner Paul Lilley pulled away from the back in the 3,200-meter run to win his fourth event of the day.
In all, Lilley won the 800, the 1,600, the 3,200 and was on the Gryphons’ 4x800 championship relay as he helped lead the Gryphons to the school’s first back-to-back spring track and field championship.
An achievement that hadn’t been accomplished since 1994 was the focus this whole season for Lilley.
