Standing on third base in the bottom of the ninth, Rocky Mount High shortstop Spenser Ramsey was oozing with what has become the Gryphons most abundant trait: Confidence.
He knew that if the ball snuck past the catcher, he was heading home – so much so that it might have been metaphorically seeping out of his pours.
There was no question in his mind once the ball caromed off the backstop after Nash Central pitcher Jordan Taylor missed his mark.
Ramsey sped home and slid in safely without a throw. Pinch hitter Ben Winstead had to step out of the way, not of the play, but of the bench-clearing wave that crashed across home plate.
