ROCKY MOUNT — The Fike High girls soccer team tumbled from the 3-A Big East Conference lead with a 4-2 loss to Rocky Mount on Thursday.

Instead, Rocky Mount climbed into the lead at 3-0-1 and vaulted to 10-2-2 overall. The Lady Golden Demons dipped to 4-1 and 11-2-1, respectively.

The Lady Gryphons, up 1-0 at halftime, forged a 3-0 cushion before the Fike offense clicked. Meghan Boswell netted the first Fike goal after a corner kick was deflected. Less than three minutes later, freshman Katie Stokely hammered in a shot after fielding a ball played to her by classmate Alexis Taylor.

Some 30 minutes still remained and Fike only trailed 3-2. However, Rocky Mount added an insurance goal with just over seven minutes remaining.

“We were outplayed by Rocky Mount today in all facets of the game,” said Fike head coach Toni Varacchi. “We gave up early goals in each half and had to try and crawl our way out of a hole to fight back. We have to find a better way to find some intensity early in the game and not wait for the game to come to us.

“We have played five games in the last seven days, and I think it caught up with us today.”
