ROCKY MOUNT — The Fike High varsity baseball team placed the skids on a two-game losing streak following a 7-0 start Thursday, using a complete-game effort from senior left-hander Travis Ricks in securing a 5-1 3-A Big East Conference victory over Rocky Mount.

Trailing 1-0 (RM's Andy Morris RBI-single in the first) in the third, Fike (8-2, 1-2 Big East) took the lead for good on consecutive run-producing hits from Hunter Cockrell and Dustin Edwards. Cockrell doubled to plate Charlie Vaughan, while Edwards plated Cockrell with a single.

In the sixth, Nathan Everette worked a bases-loaded walk and Vaughan collected his second RBI of the evening with a single for a 4-1 lead. A fielding error on the play allowed the final run to score.

Fike manuvered out of trouble in the bottom of the sixth as the Gryphons (3-8, 0-3 Big East) loaded the bases with no one out. But J.D. Sherrod turned in a diving play in right field for the first out, and Ricks notched a strikeout for the second out. The Golden Demons escaped after a grounder to Ricks was fielded and tossed to first for the final out.

Rocky Mount had several chances to score on the evening, but the Gryphons left 13 runners on base in the contest.
