Since 1997, the pregame music at Rocky Mount High boys’ basketball games has always almost included some Earth, Wind & Fire.
That was Gryphons coach Mike Gainey’s first season on the sideline as the head of the boys’ program, and truth be told, Gainey used to always feel more like drummer Maurice White, guitarist Michael Beale and trumpet man Leslie Drayton of the famed R&B group than that of a leader of high school teenagers.
Gainey never wasted his musical talents. The only thing that slowed him down from perhaps making his own mark in the performing arts was his rare ability to succeed at a handful of things.
Gainey loves music, and it carried him through life as a boy growing up in Suffolk, Virginia, where he dabbled as a disc jockey under the name, “DJ Tank TNT.” He also played the trumpet and was the drum major for the marching band at John Yeates High School.
