ROCKY MOUNT — The SouthWest Edgecombe High varsity baseball team continued to struggle against 3-A opposition, dropping a 7-1 decision at Rocky Mount of the 3-A Big East Conference on Tuesday.

The Cougars of the 2-A Eastern Plains Conference stand 0-2, also losing to Fike of the Big East.

Two Rocky Mount pitchers limited SouthWest to one hit, junior Jeff Letchworth’s single. The Gryphons constructed a 5-0 lead before SouthWest pushed across its run in the sixth. Rocky Mount struck for two runs in each of the first, fourth and sixth innings.

Starting SouthWest pitcher Stephen Thompson, a junior right-hander, took the loss.

“We did not hit the ball as we needed,” said second-year SouthWest head coach Tommy Tolson. “Our pitching was good enough to win; we just made a couple of errors at some bad times, and Rocky Mount took advantage.

“The players are working hard at practice. We just have to find a way to make it all happen together in games.”
