LAS CRUCES, NM– For the winner, a cash prize, race points and bragging rights await, but the losers will be left with a mouthful of dust as they watch the competition pedal across the finish line.
The dirt track will be packed in April when expert and novice Bicycle Motocross (BMX) racers from around the nation go head-to-head in hopes of winning the “Roadrunner Nationals” BMX competition.
Las Cruces is the fifth stop of 20 in the National Bicycle League’s BMX National Championship Series’s path across the nation, and this year’s competition promises a new selection of competitive categories. In addition to traditional team competition, three of the four race categories will feature “virtual teams,” where every rider participating in races is randomly paired with others to form virtual teams for an extra chance to win some cash.
Participants can enter categories that range from white-knuckle mixed doubles to Super ProAm competition, with up to $2,000 and $4,000 in prize money up for grabs, respectively.
The events will start with bike inspections and registration on Friday, April 1 from 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the roadrunner BMX Park on the corner of Walnut Ave. and Hadley St., followed by practice and a pre-race. Competition will be held on Saturday and Sunday starting at 7 a.m.
Road Runner BMX is a non-profit youth organization of Southwest Youth Sports, Inc. and recently celebrated 32 years of being part of the Las Cruces Community.
