Phelps and Gray lead MDI to Semi’s

Bangor - Junior guard Jonathan Phelps scored a game high 17 points including four 3’s to propel #3 MDI Trojans over the #6 Winslow Black Raiders 48-42 on Friday night at the Bangor Auditorium.
MDI jumped out to an early lead with great production from everyone in their starting lineup. The Trojans led 10-4 after one quarter.
Winslow played much better in the second quarter and ended the first half on a 9-0 run. Junior guard Trevor Lovely scored 10 of his team’s 13 points in the second quarter to help the Black Raiders get back into the game.
MDI held a slight edge 21-17 at the half.
The Black Raiders played great in the third quarter as well. Sophomore forward Justin Martin scored all 10 of his points in the quarter. The Black Raiders cut their deficit to one 33-32 at the end of three quarters.
The Trojans played well when it counted down the stretch. It may have not been their best game, but they came out on top. MDI went 6-8 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to help them hold on for the victory.
Seven players scored for MDI. Senior center Adam Gray had 11, senior forward Ben Walls and senior guard each scored seven points and Abe Philbrook, Colin Mooers and Andrew Davis chipped with two points each.
Two players were in double figures for Winslow. Junior guard Trevor Lovely led the Black Raiders with 17 points. Sophomore guard Nason Lanphier added seven, senior forward Austin Ireland had six and junior guard Connor Wildes chipped in with two points.
Winslow shot 62 percent (8-13) from the free throw line. The Trojans shot 45 percent (9-20) from the charity stripe.
MDI will face #2 Presque Isle in a rematch of last year’s eastern maine class “B” boys semifinal, where the Trojans went onto win.
