Orono - Junior guard Elea Kass scored 13 points to lead the Orono Red Riots to an overtime victory over the John Bapst Crusaders 44-42 at Orono High School on Thursday night.

John Bapst got off to a fast start with Darby Paul hitting both of her 3-pointers in the first quarter. The Crusaders led 14-7 after the first quarter.

“We definitely had a slow start, but Jordan Hernandez stepped up and hit a couple 3’s and Jillian had a few key rebounds for us tonight,” said Orono girls basketball coach Jessica Witham.

Orono changed up their defense and held John Bapst under 10 points a quarter for the rest of the game.

The game was tied at 37-37 going into overtime. John Bapst struggled to capitalize and only was able to manage one basket in overtime.

John Bapst was able to continue to keep the game close throughout. The Crusaders held the lead both in the first half and second half, but could hold on in overtime.

Five players scored for the Red Riots. Sophomore Katie Sypher had 11 points, Katie Smith added seven, Jillian Woodward scored six and two came in key moments in overtime and freshmen Hernandez contributed with six points in their win.

Witham talked about how they did not really change much defensively except for matching up a little different to prevent the Crusaders from making shots.

The Crusaders shot 85 percent (6-7) from the free throw line. Orono shot 46 percent (7-15) from the charity stripe.

Meagan True led John Bapst with 13 points. Jordan Turner and Paul each scored eight, Courtney Benson and Karrie O’Donnell contributed with five and Hannah Phillippon chipped in with three points.

The Crusaders shot 85 percent (6-7) from the free throw line. Orono shot 46 percent (7-15) from the charity stripe.

Orono has two tough games to finish up the regular season. The Red Riots travel to Penquis on Tuesday February 5th and host undefeated Dexter on Thursday February 7th.

“It doesn’t matter what seed you are or what color uniform you wear anyone can beat anyone in the tournament,” said Witham about their focus with two games left in the regular season.

The Crusaders will finish the regular season hosting Old Town on Tuesday and Thursday they play at Hermon.
