Bar Harbor - Senior point guard Chandler Guerrette scored a game high 24 points to lead the Presque Isle Wildcats over the Mount Desert Island Trojans 52-40 at MDI High School on Friday night.
Presque Isle jumped out to an early 9-4 lead in the opening quarter, but MDI closed the gap to three at the end of the quarter. The Wildcats led 13-10 after one quarter.
The second quarter was all about defensive with both teams combining to score only 11 points. Presque Isle outscored the Trojans 7-4, but this was the fewest points they have scored in quarter all season. The Wildcats led 20-14 going into halftime.
Presque Isle came out on fire in the third quarter and were able to get out in the open floor scoring several easy baskets. Guerrette led the Wildcats with eight points in the quarter to help extend their lead.
“She makes us go. There is no one quicker than her in eastern Maine. She is a tough matchup for anyone and 24 points in a big game shows the type of player she is,” said Presque Isle girls basketball coach Jeff Hudson when talking about Chandler’s performance.
The Wildcats hit two big 3’s late in the third quarter to open their lead to double digits. Presque led 34-23 at the end of three quarters.
“Megan made a big three and then Chandler made a couple big plays to push our lead to 11,” said Hudson.
Despite being outplayed for the most of the game, MDI was able to trim their deficit to 45-40 late in the fourth quarter. Freshmen forward Kelsey Shaw scored eight of her 12 points in the quarter to help the Trojans get back into the game. MDI hit three 3-pointers in the quarter during their big run, but were not able to complete the comeback.
The Wildcats finished the game from the free throw line going 9-15 in the quarter. Sophomore forward Hannah Graham finished the game making four straight from the line to ice the game for Presque Isle.
Hudson said “We are not the same team with her on the bench.” Hudson continued “She is a good free throw shooter and at the end of the game I really trust she is going to make them.”
Two players scored in double figures for Presque Isle. Graham finished with 12, senior guard Megan Ireland added six, Regan Nelson and Krystal Kingsbury each scored four points and Karlee Bernier chipped in with two points.
Guerrette talks about how Graham helps her become more of a scorer on the floor “She has been a great ball handler all season long. It takes the pressure off me where I can score more and do not have to worry about bringing the ball up. We work pretty well together when teams press us.”
After the Wildcats win over MDI, Guerrette was 13 points away from getting her 1,000 points in her career at Presque Isle. Guerrette expressed her feelings about getting close to this milestone “I could not have done it without my team. It is special, but it goes to them too.”
Seven players scored for the Trojans. Junior forward Hannah Shaw had 10, Emily Lewis added six, Abby Jewett finished with four, Sierra Myrick and Sarah Phelps each scored three and Molly Carroll chipped in two points.
“We could not really put them away. We would make a run at them and they would come down and make a three,” said Guerrette about playing MDI.
The Wildcats shot 52 percent (12-23) from the free throw line. MDI shot 22 percent (2-9) from the charity stripe.
Guerrette said “It was a tough game until the end when we made our foul shots when it counted.”
Presque Isle improves to 15-0 and will host Houlton on Wednesday January 30th. MDI falls to 12-2 and will travel to Old Town on Tuesday January 29th.
