Orono - Senior forward Garrett Libby scored a game high 38 points to lead the Old Town Coyotes to a blowout win over cross town rivals the Orono Red Riots 77-46 at Orono High School on Saturday night.
Old Town came into the game looking to continue their winning streak after beating John Bapst 53-46 on Wednesday January 9th. Orono was searching for their first win, however they did not have an answer to stop last year’s Big East Player of the Year (Libby).
The Coyotes started the game on a 12-0 run and never looked back. With five minutes to go in the first quarter, Damien Heeger scored a basket to put Orono on the board.
Libby poured in 24 of his 38 points from behind the arc falling short of tying a school record set ten years ago by former Old Town standout Kevin Emerson, who set the record in 2003 as a senior hitting nine 3’s.
Eleven out of the 13 players for the Coyotes scored on the night. Cam Archer scored eight points, Garvey Melmed had seven, five players finished with two points (Tyler Lynch, Mitchell Cole, Brian Dunn, Tyler Gifford and Brandon Emerson). Eddie Gonnella and Adam Richardson each scored four points, and Rodrigo Zertuche and Zach Bartlett each chipped in with three points.
Mike Chambers led the Red Riots scoring seven of his 11 points in the fourth quarter. Jesse Kelly and Heeger each scored seven points, Ethan Hall and Justin White each had four, Corey Riemersma, Collin Clement, Jack Lucy and Jacob Earl each chipped in with two points.
Old Town improved to 8-3 and will host MDI on Tuesday January 15th. Orono has continued to play hard despite being outplayed and will look to get their first win as they host Central on Monday January 14th.
