Hermon - Junior forward Hannah Shaw scored a game high 15 points to lead the Mount Desert Island Trojans to a blowout win over the Hermon Hawks 55-27 at Hermon High School on Tuesday night.
MDI started the game with a 19-5 run and never looked back. Senior Emily Lewis scored five points in the first quarter to lead the Trojans.
She can handle pressure, rebounds well, and is one of our leading scorers. I thought she had a real gutsy performance,” said MDI girls basketball coach Brent Barker when talking about Shaw’s play.
The Trojans played great defense all night limiting Hermon to 10 points in the first half. Shaw had eight first half points to lead MDI.
“It really helped us offensively the way our defense played tonight,” said Barker.
MDI led 27-10 at halftime.
Hermon opened the third quarter on a 5-0 run cutting their deficit to 12 points 27-15.
The Hawks made several adjustments coming at the half, but were unable to score again in the quarter.
Barker said “We were not quite ready mentally for their pressure, but we worked our way through it.”
The Trojans led 34-15 after three quarters.
MDI picked up their play in the fourth quarter. Seven players scored in the quarter. The Trojans ran up and down the floor get several layoffs in transition to extend their lead. The Hawks were not able to slow down the fast paced and disciplined Trojans.
Nine players scored for MDI. Lewis had nine, freshmen guard Sierra Tapley added eight, Sierra Myrick and Sarah Phelps each scored six points, Kelsey Shaw with four, Sara Norberg contributed with three and Abby Jewett and Keely McConomy each chipped in with two points.
“We can go nine or 10 deep at times, which makes practices competitive,” said Barker.
Junior point guard Raychel Alley led Hermon with 12 points. Junior guard Jenna Crouse had seven, Shelby Caron, Gretchen Spencer and Brittney Hamlin each scored two points and Bryanne Crouse and Savannah Allain each chipped in with one point.
The Trojans shot 36 percent (6-16) from the free throw line. The Hawks shot 47 percent (10-21) from the charity stripe.
Barker said “This was a big point worthy game for us.” Barker added “I think we came out and played four good quarters of basketball.”
MDI improved to 8-1 on the season and will host Old Town on Monday January 14th. Hermon will travel to Caribou on Saturday January 12th.
