Hermon - Junior 6’8” center Bradley Shields scored nine of his 17 points in the second quarter to lead the Presque Isle Wildcats to the victory over the Hermon Hawks 56-50 at Hermon High School on Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks controlled play in the first quarter, but held by a very slim margin 11-8 at end of the quarter.

Despite the first half being really close, Presque Isle outscored Hermon in the second quarter 16-13. Shields scored nine points in the quarter to lead the Wildcats.

“He has soft hands and a good finisher around the hoop,” said Presque Isle boys coach when talking about Bradley Shields.

The game was tied at 24-24 going into halftime.

The third quarter was a dogfight. Senior forward Tyler Brooks scored six points to lead Presque Isle. The Wildcats led by two 37-35 going into the final quarter.

Cummings said about Brooks coming off a rolled ankle “He was able to dig down deep and find that extra burst of energy and played really well.”

Presque Isle won the game from the free throw line. Senior point guard Jonah Stephenson scored eight points in fourth quarter and made his last five free throws to lead the Wildcats to the victory.

“We have been trying to get senior leadership and making him a little bit more vocal,” said Cummings when talking about Jonah’s play.

The difference in the game was free throws.

Cummings said “When we are on the road we want to be up eight or 10 points with five or six minutes left and that cushion proved to be the difference.”

Seven players scored for the Wildcats. Stephenson scored 16 points and went 6-9 from the line, Brooks had 13, Cody Lyford and Ben Nickerson each added three, and Corey Willette and Michael Boone each chipped in with two points.

Junior guard Tyler Thayer led the Hawks scoring a game high 20 points. Eric Hoogterp added nine, Jacob Rioux with eight, Joey Martin had five points, and Fritz Marseille and Bryce Hieftjie each chipped in with four points.

“Luckily we held their guards down and stopped them,” said Stephenson.

Presque Isle shot 65 percent (17-26) from the free throw line. Hermon shot 50 percent (3-6) from the charity stripe.

Stephenson said “It was a good defensive effort.” Stephenson added “We focus on defense a lot and had more mental toughness.”

The Wildcats improve to 7-1 on the season and will play host to Caribou on Wednesday January 9th while Hermon travels to Mount Desert Island.
