Bangor - Senior forward Stuart Bray scored 13 points to lead the Deer Isle Stonington Mariners over the Bangor Christian Patriots 60-38 at Eastern Maine Community College on Saturday afternoon.
After losing to Dexter Friday night in their first loss of the season, the Bangor Christian boys were looking to bounce back. The Mariners and Patriots were both 6-1 coming in.
Deer Isle was led by senior Hayden Ciomei who scored seven of his team’s first 11 points in the first quarter. The Mariners held the Patriots to eight points in the first quarter. Deer Isle led 22-8 after one and never looked back.
“We started off playing zone then we went to man to man because we knew that they (Bangor Christian) were quick and wanted to slow them down,” said Deer Isle boys basketball coach Glenn Billings.
Bangor Christian struggled to get anything going struggling both on the defensive side and offense. The Patriots did not score many second chance points or looks at the basket.
Billings talked about the play of Connor Morey and Sam Grindle “Being able to get the ball into our big guys was a huge key to us running our offense.”
Seven players scored for the Mariners in their win. Tim Cormier scored nine points, Morey and Grindle each had eight, Lucas Oliver and Jared Gove each scored four points, and Nathan Davis chipped in with three.
Billings said “We were pretty balanced in our scoring.”
Senior guard Seth Pearson led the Patriots with a game high 14 points. Caleb Peary had eight points, Ben Bragg added seven, Jeremy Miller with four, Jace Schmidt contributed with three and Ben miller chipped in with two points.
The Mariners improve their record to 7-1 when they travel to Penobscot Valley on Wednesday January 9th. Bangor Christian will travel to Sumner on Thursday January 10th.
