Gilpin leads Hampden boys to perfect 6-0 start

Brewer - Junior forward Zach Gilpin scored nine of his game high 17 points in the frst half to lead the Hampden Academy Broncos to a blowout win over the Brewer Witches 66-46 at Brewer High School on Friday night.

Brewer outplayed Hampden in the first quarter, but still trailed at the end of the quarter. Freshman forward Matt Pushard and junior Brendan Newcomb each scored five points for Brewer.

“I thought in the first quarter they made some shots,” said Hampden boys coach Russ Bartlett.

The Witches led 15-11 in the opening quarter, but the Broncos ended the quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 16-15 lead.

The Broncos turned up their defensive pressure in the second quarter making it difficult for Brewer to get a shot off. Hampden opened the quarter on a 10-0 run and never looked back with a halftime lead of 35-23.

Hampden continued their impressive defensive in the third quarter limiting the Witches to two points. The Broncos outscored Brewer 17-2 in the quarter and entering the final quarter with a 52-25 lead.

Bartlett said “I thought in the third quarter we played really well.” Bartlett continued “We got stops and they had to stop us in transition and we are pretty good at that.”

Despite the loss, the Witches outscored the Broncos in the fourth quarter 21-14. Senior forward Ian Burgess led Brewer scoring six points.

The Broncos had nine players score in their win. Senior forward Matt Palmer scored 12 points, Tyler Norris and Brian Fickett each scored added nine, Nick Gilpin and Matt Martin each had six, junior point guard Cameron Scott scored five points and Jake Black and Deshaun Jones each chipped in with one point.

“Matt Palmer is real dependable, guards real well, unselfish player and rebounds the ball. He is a kid you can bank on no matter who we are playing,” said Bartlett.

Burgess led the Witches with 14 points. Senior guard Jeff Weeks added 10, Newcomb had nine, Pushard with seven, freshmen guard Logan Rogerson contributed with three points, Zachary Guelsian had two and Mike Grimble chipped in with one point.   

Hampden shot 65 percent (13-20) from the free throw line. Brewer shot 38 percent (3-8) from the charity stripe.

Bartlett said “Brian comes in with a level of energy and calmness.” Bartlett added “He is a winner, makes winning plays and has a high basketball IQ.   

The Broncos will host Cony on Wednesday January 2nd while the Witches travel to Skowhegan.
