Orono - With the holidays almost over it was back to the hardwood for both the Orono Red Riots and the Golden Bucks of Bucksport. The Golden Bucks get the victory over the Red Riots 53-44 at Orono High School on Friday night.
The Red Riots kept the game close cutting it to one in the first half, but they trailed by five at halftime. Senior Chris Chaffee scored eight of his 12 points in the first half.
Bucksport went on a little run in the second half, but Orono managed to keep it close for most of the night.
“I thought it was pretty balanced and we had good shot selection,” said Bucksport boys coach Josh Tripp.
The Golden Bucks had three players in double figures. Senior Guard Mitchell Burgess scored seven of his 13 points in the fourth quarter. Senior Jimmy Osgood added 10, Senior Sam Stearns with nine, Junior Josh Gray had seven and Freshman Riley McLeod chipped in with two points.
Orono was led by senior guard Corey Riemersma with 12 points hitting three 3’s in the 4th quarter.
Josh Tripp said “We knew Riemersma was a great outside shooter and we started off with man-to-man defense.” Tripp continued “We had been battling sickness all week we wanted to try to slow it down and played a little zone, but decided to go back to man-to-man.”
Other scorers for the Red Riots were senior forward Jack Lucy finishing with 10 points and sophomore Damien Heeger with seven points.
Orono will look to get their first win of the season when they host John Bapst Memorial High School on Friday January 4th. Bucksport will look to continue their winning streak when they host Lee Academy on Thursday January 3rd.
