Beal's break out performance gives the Jonesport-Beals boys overtime victory over Deer-Isle

Jonesport - University of Maine bound senior Garet Beal scored a game high 42 points to lead the Jonesport-Beals Royals to an overtime victory over the Deer-Isle Stonington Mariners 64-58 at Jonesport-Beals High School on Saturday afternoon.
The Royals started the game with four turnovers in their first four possessions. Deer-Isle missed several layups that could have extended their first quarter lead. The game was tied at 11-11 after the first quarter.
Beal came out firing in the second quarter making three 3’s and scoring 13 points to help the Royals to a five point halftime lead 30-25.
The third quarter started similar to the second quarter with Beal catching fire early in the quarter. With five minutes to go in the quarter, Jonesport had a 38-27 lead. Senior guard Sam Grindle helped the Mariners cut into their deficit scoring 10 points late in the quarter. Deer-Isle ended the third quarter on a 16-6 run cutting their deficit to one 44-43 entering the final quarter.
Connor Morey opened the fourth quarter with a basket to give the Mariners their first lead since the first quarter 46-45. Beal continued to deliver hitting a huge 3-pointer with 1:15 to go in the game to put Jonesport-Beals up 56-54. Stuart Bray tied the game for Deer-Isle with 30 seconds to go forcing overtime.
With 1:50 left in overtime, Garet Beal finished a three-point play to give the Royals a two-point lead 60-58. Thomas Beal stepped to line with a minute to go making two free throws to extend their lead to 62-58. He made two more from the line with 24.6 seconds to go in the game to seal the victory for the defending class “D” state champs.
Garet Beal shot 56 percent (6-11) from the 3-point line, 10 rebounds, five assists and four steals to lead Jonesport-Beals to the victory. He shot 52 percent (12-23) from the floor and made 12 out of his 13 free throw attempts in the game.
Other scores for the Royals were Vinal Crowley with seven, Cole Beal added six, Leon Smith scored five and Thomas Beal chipped in with four points all from the free throw line.
Grindle led Deer-Isle scoring a team high 22 points. Nathan Davis scored 17 points, Bray added eight, Lucas Oliver with five, Morey and Hayden Ciomei each scored four points.
Jonesport-Beals shot 87 percent (20-23) from the free throw line. Deer-Isle shot 55 percent (5-9) from the charity stripe.
The Royals will travel to Shead on Tuesday December 18th. Deer-Isle will go on the road and play Sumner on Tuesday night.
