Sypher and Woodward chemistry help the Riots improve to 2-0

Orono - After coming off a close game the Lady Red Riots took on a George Stevens team that was coming off a 3-15 record and looking to improve on that with a roster filled with three seniors, four juniors and four freshmen.
Orono started the game on a run scoring the first eight points in the first five minutes of the game. The Red Riots get the victory over the Eagles of George Stevens 46-31 to improve their record to 2-0.
Katie Sypher and Senior Jillian Woodward had great chemistry all night.
Orono girls basketball coach Jessica Witham said “We have been working on our interior passing during practice and they have connected.”
Sypher scored 12 of her 16 points in the first half to lead the Red Riots. Woodward scored eight of her 10 points in the first half with most of her points coming in the paint.
Orono outscored GSA in three quarters of the game until the fourth quarter where GSA scored 16 points to Orono’s six points.
Others players who contributed for Orono were Freshman Hannah Clement scoring 5 points, Junior Katie Smith chipped in with 3 points, Junior Elea Kass had four and Junior Elizabeth Hardison finished with 2 points.
George Stevens was led by senior Mary Prescott who finished with eight points. Senior Abby Nowland hit two three’s towards the end of the game for her six points and Juniors Abby Ford and Maddie Gray each scored 4 points.
Orono will face Central at home on Saturday December 15th at 2:30.
“We have always played Central tough and they always give us a good game” said Witham.
Central will be coming off a loss, where they lost to Mattanawcook Academy 32-29. It should be a great game on Saturd
