Bangor - Junior forward Derek Richardson scored a game high 17 points to lead the Caribou Vikings to a blowout win over the John Bapst Crusaders 65-40 on Saturday night at the Bangor Auditorium.
“Derek is our banger on the inside. He does a nice job of rebounding the basketball and getting easy putbacks,” said Caribou boys basketball coach Chris Casavant.
Caribou started the game on a 7-0 run and never looked back. The Crusaders cut the deficit to 7-4 in the first quarter, but this was the closest they would get all night.
The Vikings dominated the second quarter outscoring John Bapst 20-9. Caribou scored many easy lay-ups in the second quarter to help build their big lead. They forced several turnovers and capitalized scoring multiple baskets.
Casavant talked about his team’s play on defense “We are trying to create more turnovers and get easy baskets. Casavant continued “The energy we bring at the defensive end I think carries over to the offensive end.”
Junior guard Matt Millard scored 10 of his 16 points in the first half to help Caribou to a 33-16 lead at halftime.
“Matt does a really nice job of bringing a lot of energy at both ends. He has drastically improved his shooting and scoring,” said Casavant.
The third quarter was much of the same for the Vikings building themselves a 60-30 lead entering the fourth quarter. Caribou’s quick guards and post players were too much for John Bapst to handle.
Caribou had three players in double figures in scoring. Dayne Savage, Richardson and Millard all scored in double digits.
Casavant said “It is never easy to go on the road and win in our league. To come down here and beat Bapst is a good start for us.”
Junior guard Sam Brown led John Bapst with 17 points.
Caribou will travel to Washington Academy on Saturday December 15th. John Bapst will play Mount Desert Island at home on Wednesday night looking to get their first win.
