Ridgeway Giving Tree

January 18, 2010
Ridgeway High School

For the past several years,  Ridgeway R-V’s senior class has sponsored a giving tree. Through the month of December all students and teachers at Ridgeway collected canned goods for the Harrison County Food Pantry and items for the Ronald McDonald House. Each time a student donated to the giving tree, they were given a candy cane for the tree and their name was placed on an ornament for a paper tree. The official tree was chopped down by the senior class and donated by the Rinehart family.

This year, the senior class decided to make giving to the less fortunate a competition. Each class was challenged to participate in “Can Wars”, where each elementary class and each high school class competed against each other to see who could collect the most cans. The original goal for the giving tree was 300, but Ridgeway students and their families far surpassed the school’s expectations. After a week of collecting cans, the school had already met their initial goal. With only a few days left of school, seniors had counted over 1400 cans and several boxes of donations for the Ronald McDonald House.

The winners of the competition were the 4th/5th grade class for the elementary and the 8th grade for the high school. Both classes collected 200 cans each! The senior class and members of student council delivered the cans to the food pantry on Friday, December 19th.
