The Henson's: Fast and Strong

February 19, 2011
By Walter Price of Barnstable High School

If there is a school in southeastern Massachusetts that is very happy and fortunate to have a family comprised of talented student-athletes and a truly supportive group of parents, it is Barnstable High School in Hyannis. The young athletes referred to are Benjamin (Ben) and Amanda Henson, sophomore and freshman respectively. Ben is a running back on the varsity football team and recently completed a successful second year with the winter wrestling team at Barnstable. Amanda is an emerging elite sprinter with the high school track team and figures prominently with the return to Red Raider fast running glory.

Subsequent to their first year with the Barnstable track program their enormous potential was realized at the AAU Summer Junior Olympic Games. Amanda won the youth division 100 meter dash at the regional qualifier meet in an impressive time of 12.69 and third in the 200 meter sprint in 27.38. Not to be outdone Ben placed second in both intermediate division dashes including a personal best of 11.62 in the 100 meters. Their stellar performances in that meet qualified them for the national qualifier competition in which they both just missed making the trip to the national meet.

In addition to fast running they are both champion performers in the sport of Powerlifting. Inspired by their father's successful ascendancy in the sport, both Amanda and Ben hold numerous event titles, as well as championship records, in bench press and deadlift competitions at AAU Junior Olympics.

The parents, Daniel and Victoria Henson, are very proud of their kids - to say the least. They are a family unit that is very close and take enormous pride in all accomplishments as well as all efforts taken to be successful. You will typically find at least one of the parents, including their grandfather William Falla, at an athletic competition event and, on several occasions, even at a practice session.

It should also come as no surprise that the father and mother are very active in their school's support functions. Daniel is an assistant coach with the wrestling team as well as the Red Raiders track program and serves as President of the Barnstable Quarterback Club. Victoria is an active participant of various booster organizations which supports many successful programs in the school.

After an impressive performance at the Northeast Indoor Track Classic (see video clips at iHigh.com Massachusetts), several assumptions can safely be made. Look for the sibling duo to run very fast this spring, set various Red Raider records, be major contenders for Old Colony League all-star status and make a progressive impression at the MIAA spring tournament.
