DEVILS OPEN WITH WIN
August 24, 2013Richmond High School
(RICHMOND) Matt Holeva and the Richmond Red Devils were met Friday night with an electric atmosphere they haven't felt in a long time. On a night the community celebrated the re-dedication of Lyboult Stadium, Richmond defeated Connersville 23-7. Richmond is 1-0 for the first time since 2002.
Coach Holeva said after the game the crowd was a huge energy booster for his football team, “Honestly, I don’t know if it was the heat or not, but we were kind of flat in practice all week. I think the crowd and the music and everything did a nice job of energizing us.” (See video for more comments).
RB Derek Williams scored the first touchdown of 2013 from 4 yards out in the first quarter, then RHS quarterback Tyler Ripperger completed his first pass of the night — a 79-yard scoring strike to junior Brendan Hegg that put Richmond ahead 14-0 with 6:19 left in the second quarter.
Ripperger found WR Auntonio Brown on fourth-and-18 for a 35-yard score and the 21-0 lead with 23.7 seconds left in the third quarter.
Richmond completed their scoring with a safety after Connersville QB Grant West was flagged for an intentional grounding while in the end zone.
Connersville scored when West found WR Micah Kelley for a 25-yard score late in the game.
Richmond travels to New Palestine next Friday, gametime is 7...pre-game on RadioTroy.com is 6:30.
