1963 The first metal tennis racquet was invented, dramatically changing the game of tennis.
1980 At the Winter Olympic games at Lake Placid the United States hockey team defeated Finland 4-3 to win the gold medal.
1982 Edmonton's Wayne Gretzky scored his record 77th goal of the season. He broke Phil Esposito's record of 76 goals he scored in the 1971 season.
1985 Quarterback Jim Kelly, while playing with the Houston Gamblers of the United States Football League, passed for a pro football record 574 yards.
1991 Soft Light won the Toronto Series final for older pacers in 1:54.2 at Greenwood Raceway in Toronto.
2002 At the Winter Olympics Joe Sakic and Jarome Iginla scored two goals apiece to lead Canada to a 5-2 victory over the United States in the men's hockey gold medal game.
2002 The Winter Olympic Games at Salt Lake City, Utah came to an end with the closing ceremonies at Rice-Eccles Olympic Stadium.
2004 The Phoenix Coyotes fired head coach Bob Francis.
2004 The St. Louis Blues fired head coach Joel Quenneville and replaced him with assistant Mike Kitchen.
2006 American Julia Mancuso won the gold medal in the women's giant slalom at the Winter Olympics.
2006 The United States won its first-ever medal in curling, defeating Great Britain 8-6 in the bronze medal match of the men's curling tournament.
2006 Bob de Jong of the Netherlands won the gold medal in the men's 10,000 meter speedskating.
2009 The Indianapolis Colts released wide receiver Marvin Harrison.
2010 At the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada won gold and silver in women's bobsled, earning medals in the event for the first time in the country's history.
