1928 Canada's Olympic hockey team was so impressive that officials gave them a bye into the medal round rather than indulge a series of blowouts. Canada won the gold medal easily by scores of 11-0, 14-0 and 13-0.
1984 Cale Yarborough became the second person to win consecutive Daytona 500's. Richard Petty was the first.
1984 At the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia American Phil Mahre won the gold medal while his brother Steve won the silver medal in men's slalom becoming the first brothers to ever finish first and second in an Olympic event.
1977 Rangers RW Rod Gilbert scored his 1,000th career point.
1990 No Sex Please won the Su Mac Lad final in 1:57.4 at the Meadowlands Racetrack in New Jersey.
1994 At the Winter Olympic games in Lillehammer, Norway, American speedskater Bonnie Blair won her fourth career gold medal by winning the 500 meters race.
1996 Phoenix's Charles Barkley became the 10th player in NBA history to score 20,000 points and have 10,000 rebounds.
2002 Americans Jill Bakken and Vonetta Flowers won the first ever women's Olympic bobsled gold medals.
2003 Oregon State named Mike Riley its new head football coach.
2004 The NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions placed St. Bonaventure University on probation for three years due to violations in the men's basketball program.
2004 The Atlanta Hawks traded forward Rasheed Wallace to the Detroit Pistons as part of a three-team deal that also included the Boston Celtics.
2005 Undisputed middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins successfully defended his titles with a unanimous 12-round decision over Howard Eastman at the Staples Center.
2006 Dwyane Wade's basket with 16.6 seconds remaining rallied the Eastern Conference past the Western Conference, 122-120, at the 55th annual NBA All-Star Game at the Toyota Center.
2006 Jimmie Johnson crossed the finish line just ahead of Casey Mears to capture the 48th running of NASCAR's Daytona 500.
2007 The San Diego Chargers named Norv Turner their new head coach.
2008 The New Jersey Nets traded Jason Kidd to the Dallas Mavericks, along with forwards Malik Allen and Antoine Wright, in exchange for guard Devin Harris, swingmen Maurice Ager and Trenton Hassell, center DeSagana Diop, forward Keith Van Horn and first-round draft picks in 2008 & 2010.
2008 Arkansas State basketball coach Dickey Nutt resigned.
2010 Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal claimed gold in the men's super-G and American skier Bode Miller earned silver for his second medal of the Vancouver Olympics.
2012 The New York Yankees traded RHP A.J. Burnett to the Pittsburgh Pirates for a pair of minor leaguers.
2012 The Pittsburgh Penguins re-signed forward James Neal to a six-year contract extension worth $30 million.
