FOUR EARLHAM PLAYERS ON PRE-SEASON LIST

RICHMOND, Ind. — Four players from the Earlham College baseball team were recognized
on Tuesday as the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference's pre-season poll was
Ted Williams, Ryan Hayes, Sam Ward and Matt Brankle were all named to the HCAC
Players to Watch list as the Quakers were picked eighth in the poll.
Williams, who was selected to the All-HCAC Second Team last season, led the Quakers
with a .346 batting average along with 45 hits, 31 RBI, 27 runs scored and six
triples. Williams, who was All-HCAC Honorable Mention in 2011, batted .349 in 23
conference contests. He was named the team's Most Valuable Player in 2012.
An All-HCAC Honorable Mention choice a year ago, Hayes led the Quakers with five
home runs and was second on the team with a .336 batting average, 37 hits and 21
Ward led the Quakers in stolen bases last season with 14 in 17 attempts, while
batting .254 with a homer and 20 RBI.
Brankle was named Earlham's Newcomer of the Year in 2012. Brankle finished last
spring with 65 strikeouts, which is second on Earlham's all-time single-season list.
He also had two saves, which is tied for the second best single-season total. His
strikeout total was 92nd in the nation last year and he was ranked 52nd in
strikeouts per nine innings.
Manchester University was selected for the top spot in the pre-season poll, while
Franklin College was second and the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology was third.
The Quakers begin the season at the University of the South in Tennessee on Feb. 23.
The doubleheader in Sewanee starts at noon.
