NFC Players of the Month -- December

January 4, 2013
Richmond High School

Running back ADRIAN PETERSON of the Minnesota Vikings, linebacker LONDON FLETCHER of the Washington Redskins and rookie kicker BLAIR WALSH of the Vikings are the NFC Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Month for December, the NFL announced today.

OFFENSE: RB ADRIAN PETERSON, MINNESOTA VIKINGS

  • Peterson, who was selected to his fifth Pro Bowl, rushed for 861 yards and scored six touchdowns (five rushing, one receiving) as the Vikings won their final four games of the month to clinch a playoff berth.
  • Peterson’s 861 rushing yards are the most ever by a player in a single month in NFL history.
  • He finished the season with 2,097 rushing yards, the second-most in a single season in league history and just nine shy of breaking Pro Football Hall of Famer ERIC DICKERSON’s NFL record (2,105 in 1984).
  • Peterson averaged 172.2 rushing yards per game in December, including three games with at least 199 yards.
  • He had seven games with at least 150 rushing yards, tied for the most in a single season with Pro Football Hall of Famer EARL CAMPBELL (1980).
  • Peterson averaged 6.0 yards per carry this season and is only the sixth player in NFL history to lead the league in rushing and average at least 6.0 yards per carry. He joins BEATTIE FEATHERS (1934) and Pro Football Hall of Famers JOE PERRY (1954), JIM BROWN (1963), O.J. SIMPSON (1973) and BARRY SANDERS (1997).
  • In his sixth season from Oklahoma, this is Peterson’s first career Player of the Month Award.
  • He and ROBERT SMITH (November 2000) are the only running backs in franchise history to be named Offensive Player of the Month.

DEFENSE: LB LONDON FLETCHER, WASHINGTON REDSKINS

  • Fletcher had 51 tackles, three interceptions, two sacks and four passes defensed as the Redskins went 5-0 during December and clinched the NFC East for the first time since 1999.
  • During the month, Fletcher was the only player in the NFL with at least three interceptions and two sacks.
  • In each of the final four games of the month, Fletcher recorded at least a sack or an interception.
  • Fletcher’s 51 tackles during the month tied for the second-most in the league. He had at least seven tackles in all five games, including three 10+ tackle performances.
  • In his 15th year from John Carroll, this is Fletcher’s first career Player of the Month Award.
  • He is the third Redskins linebacker to be named Defensive Player of the Month, joining WILBER MARSHALL (October 1991, October 1992) and MARCUS WASHINGTON (December 2005).
  • Fletcher is the first Redskin to be named Player of the Month since CLINTON PORTIS in 2008 (October, Offense).

SPECIAL TEAMS: K BLAIR WALSH, MINNESOTA VIKINGS

  • Walsh scored 47 points and converted 11 of 12 field-goal attempts as the Vikings won their final four games of December to clinch a playoff berth.
  • During the month, Walsh kicked five field goals of at least 50 yards and set an NFL single-season record with 10 50+ yard field goals. He was 10 of 10 on 50+ yard field-goal attempts during the season.
  • Walsh, who was selected to the Pro Bowl, tied for the league lead during December with 11 field goals. He finished the season with an NFL-best 35 field goals.
  • In his rookie season from Georgia, this is Walsh’s first career Player of the Month Award.
  • He is the first rookie kicker in franchise history to be named Player of the Month.
  • Walsh joins FUAD REVEIZ (December 1994) and GARY ANDERSON (December 1998) as the only Vikings kickers to be named Player of the Month.
