The Wettig will have the best field ever!!!

Troy Derengowski

The Bob Wettig basketball tournament begins Thursday morning at 9am.  The first of 32 games over a three day period.  It is a grueling three days.  Not just for the players but all the people who make it possible.   We are talking about the coaches, Chad Bolser and his staff, the officials and the support personnel that keep the Tiernan Center going smoothly.   You need to take a moment to look around during the tournament a see what it takes.  Watch everyone as they organize every detail possible to make sure this tournament runs like a well oiled machine.  It is incredible!!!   Now let’s hope the snow stays away enough and we won’t have a blizzard that could interrupt the tournament.

I believe this will be the best Wettig Tournament we have ever had.   Richmond will have to play extremely well if they plan on winning.   Before we look at the two out of state teams, here is a quick look at the teams from Indiana that will have a great impact:

Jeffersonville.   The Red Devils are ranked 11th in the latest AP 4A poll.   They are loaded with talent and are currently 5-1 on the season.  Dionte Allen, Darryl Baker, Jaquari Chandler and Dew Ellis will be players to watch.  Jeffersonville has enough talent to win this tournament.

Guerin Catholic.   Gurein Catholic is ranked 7th in 3A and are 7-1 this season.   Guerin beat NCC teams Muncie Central and Anderson.   They finished 2nd in the tournament last season losing to Columbus North in the championship game.   Aaron Brennan is one of the top players in the state averaging 18.4 ppg.   Guerin Catholic is a solid, well coached basketball team!

Columbus North.  The defending champions with plenty of talent back from last season including Evan Henry (14.0 ppg), Josh Speidel 14.0 ppg and the MVP last season), Sawyer Glick (13.3 ppg) and Tory Jackson (13.2 ppg).   North is 5-1 with their lone loss coming at #1 4A Pike 76-74.    North will play Moore, Kentucky in the opening round which could be the best matchup during the tournament.  We will have more on Moore, Kentucky in just a moment.  If North gets by the opening round, they will have a good shot at another title.

Tipton.  The Blue Devils are ranked #2 in 2A.  They are 6-0 on the season and as we saw last season they are very sound and another well coached team.  Mike Crawford, Blake Hoover, Luke Shively and Austin Hooker provide a great core.

Jennings County comes in at 5-2, Rock Creek Academy is 4-4, Portage is 4-3, Connersville is 4-3, Indy Tindley 6-0, Indy Chatard comes in at 3-2.  The teams with losing records include East Central 2-4, Indy Metro 3-5 and Floyd Central is 2-4.  East Central is better than their 2-4 record indicates, Portage will be very tough and Chatard will be another competitive team.

The two out of state teams include Moore, Kentucky and Mt. Lebanon, PA.  Both are very good basketball teams and both have a great chance of winning this tournament.  Moore went 28-5 last season and are currently 8-4. The  Sanford brothers return- Jaelin is a Junior Guard and Jamon is a Senior Guard. James Yates is the main returning frontcourt player; he averaged 4 points and 2.5 rebounds per game in 25 games last season. The Mustangs also feature two new players down low in 6'5" junior forward Justin Richardson who transferred in from Manual and senior forward Damon Robinson who last played at Trinity. Yates, Richardson and Robinson will be needed to take a major step up in order for the Mustangs to compete this season. Izajah Armstrong will be the leader of this team both vocally and by example, other players to keep an eye on include Javaughn Jackson, Trey Drake, Trae Stott, DeShawn Seewright and Cameron Fries.

Mt. Vernon, PA is another very good team.  They went 27-4 last season and are currently 3-3.  They feature three very good players:  TYLER ROTH  6’2” GUARD…GREATER PITTSBURGH AREA TOP 60 PLAYER CLASS 2013,  TROY APKE 6’3” FORWARD…GREATER PITTSBURGH AREA TOP 60 PLAYER CLASS 2014, JOHNNY DAVID 5-10 GUARD…GREATER PITTSBURGH AREA TOP 15 PLAYER..CLASS 2015.

This by far is the best tournament field the Wettig has ever had.  We are going to see a lot of very good basketball.  See you Thursday, Friday and Saturday!!!
