RICHMOND VS LAFAYETTE JEFF

Troy Derengowski

Do you remember the last time Richmond played Lafayette Jeff in a regular season basketball game?  It was during the 2003-04 season at Lafayette.  Richmond was coached by current RHS Athletic Director Chad Bolser and the Devils won 66-55.  The next season the Bronchos pulled out of the conference, a decision they soon after regretted.  Before we look at this year’s Bronchos team, you may want to get used to having Lafayette Jeff around again.  They will be returning to the NCC very soon.  As I have discussed in previous stories, the Bronchos along with Harrison and McCutcheon will be a part of the conference’s expansion.  The other schools to apply include Muncie South and Jay County.  The NCC has also invited Noblesville to join.  Now we wait and see what happens.   The MIC will make their decision on expansion in February and it won’t include the three Lafayette schools.  RHS basketball coach Joe Luce told me Thursday he supports conference expansion and feels the NCC could use a shot in the arm.  Luce also says he would support a home and home series in the NCC.

Now for the Bronchos…Lafayette Jeff comes in at 3-5 on the season.  They beat 1A Pioneer 51-38 before dropping their next two contests to Harrison 55-50 and Twin Lakes 60-51.  Jeff then defeated Benton Central 50-46, lost to Westfield in OT 53-30, downed Logansport 51-41, and the lost their last two contests to Noblesville 48-33 and Kokomo 45-35.

Lafayette Jeff is led by Quarin Hood at 12.6ppg, and shoots 49% from three point range.  Tyler Buchanan is second on the team in scoring at 11.1.  Buchanan shoots a team best 56% from the floor.

Joe Luce says Lafayette Jeff reminds him a lot of his team; young players with a lot of talent that has yet to fully develop.
