RICHMOND VS HUNTINGTON NORTH

Friday night the Red Devils will begin NCC play against Huntington North at the Tiernan Center.   This is an important game for many reasons but perhaps the most important reason is getting one up in the NCC championship race.  Don’t kid yourself, an NCC championship is important to Joe Luce and this basketball team.

Do you know how many NCC championships the Red Devils have won?   Seven!   Only seven in all the years in this conference?   Those numbers aren’t very good.    In fact, the Red Devils didn’t win the conference championship the year they won the state championship in 1992.  Richmond has finished second recently and that has left a bad taste in Coach Luce’s mouth.   Getting that first NCC win will be vital if this team plans on winning their first NCC title since 2002.  Just in case you were wondering what years Richmond has won a conference championship…here they are: 1942-43, 1969-70, 1970-71, 1975-76, 1976-77, 1987-88, 2001-02.

Now for the Vikings.   They are 3-2 with wins over Mississinewa, Southwood and Warsaw.  Huntington has lost to Homestead and Ft. Wayne Carroll.   Rob Irwin is their new head coach.   As for their personnel, they are led by Senior Guard Noah Reed (16.0 ppg),  6-4 Forward Kalvin Miller (11.2 ppg, 60% FG),  6-3 Forward Trenton Kern (9.8 ppg, 5.0 rpg), 6-6 Center Kyle Platt (7.0 ppg, 5 rpg), and Guard Matt Hogan (5.6 ppg).

Richmond beat Huntington North last season 89-68.

Richmond leads the series 5-3.
