NFC Players of the Week

December 5, 2012
Richmond High School

Rookie quarterback RUSSELL WILSON of the Seattle Seahawks, safety WILLIAM MOORE of the Atlanta Falcons and rookie kicker GREG ZUERLEIN of the St. Louis Rams are the NFC Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for games played the 13th week of the 2012 season (November 29, December 2-3), the NFL announced today.

OFFENSE: QB RUSSELL WILSON, SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

  • Wilson completed 23 of 37 passes (62.2 percent) for 293 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions for a 104.9 passer rating in the Seahawks’ 23-17 overtime win at Chicago. He also rushed for 71 yards, the most by a quarterback in franchise history.
  • He threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to GOLDEN TATE with 0:24 remaining to give Seattle a 17-14 lead and then threw a game-winning 13-yard TD pass to SIDNEY RICE in overtime.
  • Wilson led touchdown drives of 94, 97 and 80 yards.
  • With Seattle trailing 14-10 late in the fourth quarter, Wilson engineered a 12-play, 97-yard drive in 3:16 that ended in his touchdown pass to Tate to give the Seahawks the lead.
  • On the opening possession of overtime, Wilson led Seattle down the field on a 12-play, 80-yard drive that was capped by his TD pass to Rice.
  • In his rookie season from Wisconsin, this is Wilson’s first career Player of the Week Award.
  • He is the first Seahawk to be named Offensive Player of the Week since SHAUN ALEXANDER (Week 9, 2005).
  • Wilson is the first Seattle quarterback to be honored since MATT HASSELBECK (Week 5, 2005).

DEFENSE: S WILLIAM MOORE, ATLANTA FALCONS

  • ·         Moore had a game-high 11 tackles and two interceptions in the Falcons’ 23-13 win over New Orleans. Atlanta clinched the NFC South division in Week 13.
  • ·         The performance was Moore’s first career two-interception game. He led an Atlanta defense that registered five interceptions, the most by the Falcons since November 9, 1980. It marked the first time in DREW BREES’ career that he was intercepted five times in a game.
  • ·         Atlanta’s defense held Brees without a touchdown pass, ending his NFL-record streak of 54 consecutive games with a touchdown pass. The last time Brees did not throw a touchdown pass in a game was October 4, 2009.
  • ·         Moore’s 11 tackles and nine solo tackles both set new career-highs. This season, Moore leads the team with 75 tackles and 59 solo tackles. He ranks second on the club with four interceptions.
  • ·         In his fourth year from Missouri, this is Moore’s first career Player of the Week Award.
  • ·         In the past 15 years, Moore, THOMAS DE COUD (Week 6, 2009) and LAWYER MILLOY (Week 13, 2006) are the only Atlanta safeties to be named Defensive Player of the Week.

SPECIAL TEAMS: K GREG ZUERLEIN, ST. LOUIS RAMS

  • Zuerlein tied the game at the end of regulation with a 53-yard field goal and then won it in overtime with a 54-yard field goal in the Rams’ 16-13 win over San Francisco.
  • He is the first player in NFL history to tie the game with no time left in the fourth quarter and then win it in overtime with 50+ yard field goals.
  • This season, Zuerlein has made seven field goals of at least 50 yards, one shy of the single-season NFL record of eight held by MORTEN ANDERSEN (1995) and JASON HANSON (2008). Zuerlein’s seven 50+ yard field goals are the most by a rookie in NFL history and the most in a single season by a Rams player.
  • Zuerlein has made six field goals of at least 53 yards this year, the most in a single season in NFL history.
  • In his rookie season from Missouri Western, this is Zuerlein’s second career Player of the Week Award (Week 4).
  • He is the second Rams kicker to be honored twice, joining JEFF WILKINS (Week 15, 2002 and Week 1, 2006).
  • Zuerlein is one of three Rams rookies to be honored this season: P JOHNNY HEKKER (Special Teams, Week 5), CB JANORIS JENKINS (Defense, Week 12) and Zuerlein (Special Teams, Week 4 and 13).
