LET'S BE VISIONARY ABOUT THE NCC

November 26, 2012
By Troy Derengowski of Richmond High School

THE EXPANSION OF THE NCC

It was several weeks ago when the talk began about the North Central Conference and possible expansion.  Now the NCC and three Lafayette schools are in discussion about joining the conference.  Those three schools are former NCC member Lafayette Jeff along with Harrison and McCutcheon.  If they were to join, the league would have 11 members.  I will stick with my original idea of adding another school and having an even 12.   So I am proposing adding Jay County to the mix.  Here is what I am looking at for an expanded NCC:

WEST DIVISION: Lafayette Jeff, Harrison, McCutcheon, Logansport, Kokomo, Marion

EASTERN DIVISION: Richmond, New Castle, Muncie Central, Anderson, Huntington North, Jay County

Just for fun, here’s how the football schedule would look like for Richmond:

Vs Non-Conference Game

@ Non-Conference Game

@ New Castle

 Vs Muncie Central

Vs Anderson

@ Huntington North

Vs Jay County

@ Harrison

 Vs McCutcheon

2 non-conference games, 5 division games and 2 cross over games with the other division and there would be a NCC championship game from the two division winners.  Yea I know the IHSAA would have some problems with this but let’s dream anyway.

In basketball I am dreaming even more.  The NCC purists won’t like this but here it goes.  There would be two divisions just like football but there is a twist.   Each team will play 6 non-conference games and 14 NCC games.  Home and home games in the division and four cross over games.

Here is what a Richmond basketball schedule would look like:

Yes modifications can and will be made.  In fact, I doubt any of this will be taken seriously but it is fun to imagine what might be.  I do know this, the NCC can’t stand pat and do nothing, not in today’s ever changing landscape of high school athletics.
