AFC Players of the Week

November 23, 2012
Richmond High School

Quarterback MATT SCHAUB of the Houston Texans, linebacker VON MILLER of the Denver Broncos and punt returner-cornerback LEODIS MC KELVIN of the Buffalo Bills are the AFC Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for games played the 11th week of the 2012 season (November 15, 18-19), the NFL announced today.

OFFENSE: QB MATT SCHAUB, HOUSTON TEXANS

  • Schaub completed 43 of 55 passes (78.2 percent) for 527 yards with five touchdowns and a 121.7 passer rating in the Texans’ 43-37 overtime win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
  • Schaub’s 527 passing yards are tied for the second-most in a game in NFL history (Pro Football Hall of Famer WARREN MOON, December 16, 1990). Pro Football Hall of Famer NORM VAN BROCKLIN holds the NFL single-game record with 554 passing yards (September 28, 1951).
  • His five touchdown passes were a franchise record and the most in the NFL in Week 11.
  • Schaub’s 43 completions set a Texans single-game record and are the most in an NFL game in 2012.
  • Helped the Texans improve to 9-1, the best record in franchise history through 10 games.
  • In his ninthseason from Virginia, this is Schaub’s fourth Offensive Player of the Week Award, the most ever by a Texans player. He most recently won the award in 2010 (Week 6).
  • He is the first Texans player to win AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors this season.

DEFENSE: LB VON MILLER, DENVER BRONCOS

  • Miller registered six tackles, three sacks and two forced fumbles in the Broncos’ 30-23 win over the San Diego Chargers.
  • Miller’s three sacks were an AFC-best in Week 11.
  • He is the only AFC player this season to record at least three sacks and two forced fumbles in a game.
  • Helped the Broncos win their fifth consecutive game and improve to 7-3 atop the AFC West.
  • ·         Miller now has 24.5 career sacks, the second-most sacks through a player’s first 25 games since 1982. Only Pro Football Hall of Famer DERRICK THOMAS (25) has more sacks through a player’s first 25 games.
  • In his second season from Texas A&M, this is Miller’s second career Defensive Player of the Week Award.
  • He previously won the award in 2011 (Week 11). Miller joins TRACY PORTER (Week 1) and WESLEY WOODYARD (Week 8) as the third Bronco to win Defensive Player of the Week this season.
  • Through Week 11, Miller ranks second in the NFL and first in the AFC with 13 sacks.

SPECIAL TEAMS: PR-CB LEODIS MC KELVIN, BUFFALO BILLS

  • ·         McKelvin registered a 79-yard punt return-touchdown in the Bills’ 19-14 win over Miami on Thursday Night Football.
  • ·         His 79-yard PR-TD was the longest in Week 11 and was the Bills’ only touchdown of the game. It marked the third-longest punt return in the league this season.
  • ·         McKelvin registered the longest punt return of the year with an 88-yard PR-TD in Week 2 against Kansas City.
  • ·         Leads the NFL with two punt return-touchdowns this season.
  • ·         Since 2011, McKelvin has three punt return-touchdowns, the second-most in the NFL (PATRICK PETERSON, four).
  • ·         In his fifth season from Troy, this is McKelvin’s first career Special Teams Player of the Week Award.
  • ·         He is the first Bills returner to win Special Teams Player of the Week since C.J. SPILLER in 2010 (Week 3).
