SPEAKING OF SPORTS

TROY DERENGOWSKI

What a weekend in sports.  Alabama goes down and the defending National Champions are in trouble.   They are going to need help in getting back to the title game.  Kansas State and Oregon are in the driver seat with Notre Dame waiting in the wings.

Here’s the schedule this week for the top teams:

(14) Stanford at (1) Oregon, 8:00 PM

 (2) Kansas State at Baylor, 8:00 PM

Wake Forest at (3) Notre Dame, 3:30 PM

Western Carolina at (4) Alabama, 12:21 PM

By the way just in case you didn’t notice, Indiana isn’t quite ready for the national spotlight after losing to Wisconsin.  The Badgers rushed for an incredible 564 yards!   Yes Indiana is better than last year but it is going to take a little longer before the Hoosiers will compete for a Big Ten Championship.

The NFL season is getting into the critical stages.  Minnesota, New England, Dallas and Houston picked up big wins on Sunday.  The Colts continued to surprise everyone by winning on Thursday night.  Indianapolis will face their biggest test of the season at New England Sunday.  Here are Sunday’s NFL Finals:

Final Score: Baltimore 55, Oakland 20

Final Score: Denver 36, Carolina 14

Final Score: Cincinnati 31, NY Giants 13

Final Score: Tennessee 37, Miami 3

Final Score: Minnesota 34, Detroit 24

Final Score: New England 37, Buffalo 31

Final Score: New Orleans 31, Atlanta 27

Final Score: Tampa Bay 34, San Diego 24

Final Score: Seattle 28, NY Jets 7

Final Score: Dallas 38, Philadelphia 23

Final Score: San Francisco 24, St. Louis 24 (OT)

Final Score: Houston 13, Chicago 6

This is a great time of the year.  We have college football, the NFL, college basketball and high school basketball.   So far, there haven’t been any big upsets but they are coming.  I was a little surprised Purdue lost.  I heard an IU fan laugh and the Purdue crowd chanting IU sucks.  The rivalry is here to stay for a while!!    Here are the top 25 scores from Sunday:

Final Score: (2) Louisville 79, Manhattan 51

Final Score: (4) Ohio State 82, Albany 60

Final Score: (9) Syracuse 62, (20) San Diego State 49

Final Score: (10) Florida 84, Alabama State 35

Final Score: (11) North Carolina 80, Florida Atlantic 56

Final Score: (12) Arizona 82, Charleston Southern 73

Final Score: (19) Baylor 78, Jackson State 47

Final Score: (23) Wisconsin 87, Southeast Louisiana 47

Final Score: (24) Cincinnati 80, Tennessee-Martin 57

I don’t follow the NBA the way I used to.  I find the game predictable and most of the time boring.  But I didn’t take notice when the Lakers fired Mike Brown after only five games.   This just goes to show you, win now is the theme because professional sports teams know that losing games means losing money and we all know money is really the name of the game.  By the way, Mike D’Antoni was named the Lakers head coach Sunday. Here are Sunday’s NBA Finals:

Final Score: Brooklyn 82, Orlando 74

Final Score: LA Clippers 89, Atlanta 76

Final Score: Memphis 104, Miami 86

Final Score: Oklahoma City 106, Cleveland 91

Final Score: LA Lakers 103, Sacramento 90
