IT’S TIME FOR NCC TO REFORM

Troy Derengowski, Richmond’s Sports Page

There is plenty of talk around the Indianapolis are concerning two conferences, the MIC and the HCC.  The talk is about the MIC absorbing several HCC teams and forming a super conference.  Right now the MIC consists of Carmel, Ben Davis, North Central, Lawrence North, Center Grove and Warren Central.  The HCC has Avon, Brownsburg, Fishers, Hamilton Southeastern, Noblesville, Zionsville and Westfield.  The MIC has already informed both Terre Haute schools they no longer want them in the conference because of travel and rising expenses.  If that’s the case, that probably means Lafayette Jeff, McCutcheon and Harrison would also be left out in the cold.    So what direction should the NCC go?  How about forming a 12 team conference?  Seems like the obvious thing to do if you are NCC principles and athletic directors.    Why take a chance that the three Lafayette area schools would want to form their own conference and perhaps approach Kokomo, Logansport and Marion to form a new conference?

Here’s the game plan.  Absorb Lafayette Jeff, McCutcheon and Harrison.  The conference would then be split into two divisions, West and East.  Here’s how the divisions would be divided:

West: Logansport, Marion, Kokomo, Lafayette Jeff, McCutcheon and Harrison

East: Richmond, New Castle, Anderson, Muncie Central, Huntington North, and add independent Jay County.

As for scheduling, that would be up to the AD’s but I’m sure they would come up with a great game plan.  I do know this, travel would be less of a problem, costs may be less and the NCC would form a stronger conference.    As for the scheduling, how about the two divisions crossing no more than twice per season?  In other words, Richmond would only play a Western Division school only twice…once at home and once on the road.

And how about having an NCC championship game in football, basketball and baseball?  The West against the East!  In basketball, how about trying a home and home series in your division?  We do it in baseball.  Think about it.  Richmond would play New Castle, Anderson, Muncie Central, Huntington North and Jay County twice each season.  This is something the NCC should consider.   I am not an expert in scheduling and this may not be feasible but hopefully we can be more proactive in our thinking when it comes to making the NCC a bigger and better conference.  I know the purists wouldn’t like the changes but it’s time to be visionary!  Besides, why let the Indianapolis area schools have all the fun?
