The Indiana Hoosiers will have a lot of expectations on them this season.  Many pre-season publications have Indiana ranked #1 or at least in their top 5.   The Hoosier return four starters from last years team that won 27 games, including a win over National Champion Kentucky, two other top five teams and two wins in the NCAA tournament.  Indiana could have lost Cody Zeller and Christian Watford to the NBA but both return with a bevy of experience returning and a great recruiting class.

In the frontcourt Indiana will rely again on Zeller.  He justified all the hype that surrounded him coming out of Washington High School.   Zeller led the Hoosiers in scoring and rebounding and tied for the team lead in steals.  Not bad for a freshman!   Zeller could have been a top 10 pick in the 2012 NBA draft but decided against moving to the next level.    Watford finished last season in impressive fashion.  He averaged almost 17 points per game to go along with nearly eight rebounds over Indiana’s final seven games.   Will Sheehey is a hard nosed, relentless worker at small forward.  He needs to expand his mid-range to this season.   Derek Elston will play all three frontcourt positions but needs to improve his rebounding.    Indiana will have three freshmen ready to make an early contribution including Hanner Mosquera-Perea, Jeremy Holowell and Peter Jurkin.   Coach Crean will have more frontcourt depth than he has had since joining the Hoosiers.

The Indiana backcourt  will have Jordan Hulls and Victor Oladipo returning.  Hulls is the teams’ best three point shooter while Oladipo is the teams’ best athlete.  Hulls averaged 11.7 ppg while shooting 49 percent from three point range.  Oladipo can get to the rim with the best of them.   Indiana added McDonald’s All-American guard Yogi Ferrell.   Crean feels Hulls will benefit greatly from having Ferrell on the team.  Question is, can they play together?   Remy Abel had a great summer and appears to be the most improved player.  He must be a better mid-range shooter.   Maurice Creek is back after another knee injury.

This is going to be a very good Indiana basketball team.  Are they good enough to win it all?  Some experts think they can.   Indiana was pushed around for many years and now they have the muscle to do some pushing themselves.   If Watford plays like he did over the final seven games last season, Zeller gets stronger and the freshmen step up, Indiana will make a run at another National Championship.
