'Complete' game: RHS boys blank Berries, 1-0
September 23, 2012Richmond High School
Logansport painfully learned what Marion found out earlier this month: The Richmond Red Devils boys soccer team is difficult to beat when it plays a complete game.
Twelve months removed from a paltry 1-6 record in the North Central Conference, Richmond improved to 4-1 in league play Saturday with a 1-0 victory over visiting Logansport at Freeman Park.
It was the senior class’ first victory in four tries against the Berries, as it was earlier this month when the Red Devils toppled Marion 2-1 at Freeman.
Seniors Chris Szymanowski and Michael Black teamed for the game’s lone goal, and the senior-dominated defense doused the Berries’ offensive fire like the Richmond Fire Department controlling a burning building.
The defense of seniors Nathan Guth, Mitchell Ahaus and Andy Stevens, and junior Matt Sheridan dismantled every offensive attack, making it a relatively stress-free 80 minutes for junior goalkeeper Drew Barrett.
A “complete effort,” coach Sam Byrd said, and NCC title hopes are alive with two games remaining.
“We talked about that this week, about playing a consistent game and a whole game,” Byrd said. “And that’s what we did. We controlled the game.”
