RICHMOND FOOTBALL 2012: WHAT I’M WATCHING

Troy Derengowski…reddevilmainia.com

The 2012 high school football season kicks off next week.  This Friday we will get a glimpse of the Red Devils when the play Pendleton Heights at Lybolt Field.  This will only be a scrimmage but it will give us a good indication of where the Red Devils will be this season.  Here are some things I will be watching this season:

  1. The new coaching staff.  Though this is a new staff the coaches aren’t new to Richmond football or Richmond High School.  Many including Matt Holeva are teachers at Richmond and many were assistants before Eric Gillespie was hired.  I have already seen a change in attitude the many times I have attended practice.   The players have expressed their pleasure about the difference because of attitude and more importantly, discipline!
  2. Stability at QB.  Last season Richmond moved their best receiver Chandler Miller to QB.  The experiment didn’t work out.  Not because Miller wasn’t a good enough QB but because he didn’t want to play quarterback.  Plus you had Justyn Curtis waiting to get his shot.  Curtis was so impressive he made the All-NCC first team and didn’t even play a full season.  I am looking forward to watching  Justyn play a full season as a senior.
  3. Will the defense get better?   There were times last season, especially early, when I was wondering if Richmond would stop anyone.  It started with the 41-7 loss to East Central when the Red Devils gave up 446 yards of total offense.  It got a little better after that but there were still times the defense just couldn’t stop anyone with any consistency.
  4. Richmond’s running attack.   The Red Devils couldn’t run the ball in 2010 no matter what they tried.  When Richmond lost to East Central in the first game, Richmond gained only 12 yards on 21 carries.  Against New Palestine, the Red Devils managed only 39 yards on 26 carries.  But then the Red Devils found a running back in Taylor Kidd.  Kidd had an exceptional rest of the season and now the senior to be is looking good in practice and will be a huge key again this season.
  5. Can Richmond beat Kokomo?   Nobody has in a long time but this may the season.  The Wildkats lost a lot of talent from last year’s team and hopefully the Red Devils and the rest of the NCC are tired of losing to them.
  6. Finally, will Richmond win a sectional?  Yes Richmond moved down in classification last season but the result was the same, a first round loss.   The sectional is a little easier than it was in 5A but there are still a lot of quality teams Richmond will have to beat to win the sectional.

Friday nights scrimmage will be broadcast on RadioTroy.com beginning at 7pm.  The Regular season starts at East Central August 17th
