RHS coach aims for change

August 7, 2012
Richmond High School

Matt Holeva often talks about the importance of youth football.

Richmond’s new head coach is a proponent of developing a program from grades 3-12.

One of the initial steps in that development is the Hub Etchison Youth Football League for grades 3-6. Sign-ups begin today from 5-7:30 p.m. in Tiernan Center’s lobby.

“The Hub League is very important. I think it’s crucial,” Holeva said. “I’ve often said that youth league coaches and intermediate school coaches, middle school coaches, sometimes their job is more important than high school coaches.

“They are the ones really capturing the kids. At that young age, if kids aren’t learning the fundamentals, if kids aren’t having fun, if kids aren’t getting turned on to football, we might not see them at the high school level.”

The Hub League has several sign-up dates, concluding with its 9 a.m.-noon session at Tiernan Center on Aug. 25. Cost is $75 for the first child, $65 for the second child and $55 for any additional child.

For more information, contact Joe Etherington at (765) 973-3316.

“I suspect that we’ll have a great league that is going to be run well and is going to provide a great opportunity for kids to play,” Holeva said.
