The school was under NCAA investigation for a cash-for-memorabilia scandal and head coach Jim Tressel was on his way out, several key players were suspended and all hell broke loose. The Buckeyes finished 6-7 which included a four game losing streak to finish the season and a loss to Michigan. How bad could it get? Oh yea, they also got three years probation, lost nine scholarships over those three years and has been banned from a bowl game this season. So with all that bad news, is Ohio State in for a long season? Not by any means! The Buckeyes hired Urban Meyer who won two national championships at Florida, got a top five recruiting class and they return 18 starters. Oh and by the way, they play eight home games this season. Not bad for a team that many thought would be in a rebuilding mode. This program is in very good shape despite the mistakes made by Tressel. QB Braxton Miller is a great fit for Meyer’s spread offense because of his quick release, strong arm and his athleticism. Coach Meyer is always looking for a QB who will compete and Miller is a competitor. Leadership will be a key for the Buckeyes this season because of what happened last year. Miller along with FB Zach Boren and DL John Simon will be counted on to lead the Buckeyes. Talent will get you seven or eight wins a season but then discipline and leadership will push you to nine and 10 wins. Not to say the Buckeyes haven’t had issues this off-season. TE Jake Stoneburner and OL Jack Mewhort were both suspended this summer after a charge of disorderly conduct. Both were projected starters. Coach Meyer says a lack of dedication this summer could be an issue. He says both Braxton Miller and Kenny Guiton must get the passing game in order in August if they are to have any chance. One big question for Ohio State will be at running back and wide receiver as the Buckeyes lack proven star talent. Plus the offensive line returns only two starters. Despite the areas of concern, the players are having fun with the spread offense and last year’s problems will make this team have a greater sense of toughness.
