LEMONS SIGNS WITH INDIANA STATE
May 21, 2012Richmond High School
Jalencia Lemons can’t wait to take the next step in her life. Monday, Lemons made it official, signing a national letter of intent to run track at Indiana State. Her decision came a day before Lemons will compete in the Connersville Regional and just days before the state meet in Bloomington. The decision to attend Indiana State came after the Sycamores contacted Jalencia to make a visit. “I really liked the campus and everything” said Lemons after visiting Terre Haute. Lemons said Indiana State didn’t offer her a scholarship at first but after a visit to Wright State, the Sycamores then made an offer. Wright State’s offer finally forced Indiana State to step up. Lemons said “ Indiana State then called me and made their offer and that’s when I decided to go to Indiana State”. Ball State also showed interest in the Richmond hurdler but didn’t offer.
Lemons is interested in criminal justice and Indiana State has one of the best programs available. “I want to go into crime scene investigation”, said Jalencia. As for the recruiting process, Lemons said it was at times “frustrating”. “One day it was Wright State and then Indiana State the next day. It was getting annoying.”
Lemons says the Richmond coaching staff has been neutral and told Jalencia to concentrate on the school not the money because of the importance of academics. What about the family’s reaction? Jalencia says “ Mom really liked Wright State because of how close the campus is but the criminal justice program is so good at Indiana State.”
Lemons will continue to run the hurdles at ISU but says she is open to running any event they ask her to do. Lemons will graduate from Richmond as one of the few three sports athletes after lettering in soccer, basketball and track.
