Heytens Has Historic Day

November 12, 2010

Freshman Kelli Heytens shattered two previous Rebel Records and set the standard in a new category on Friday at the annual fitness testing day. Twenty one ladies took part in fitness testing and Heytens topped all of them in all three categories.
In the bench press, Heytens flew past the previous record of 46 reps set by Natalie Kapphahn. She finished with 53 reps of 55 pounds. Nkem Nwaokolo's 46 would have been good enough to tie her for first place were it not for Heytens. Another freshman, Alexis Alexander came in third on the day with 42 total reps, enough to move her into sole possession of third place in the Rebel strength records.
The previous vertical jump record was 23 inches, set by current senior Paige Scovil. Scovil topped her previous mark by a half inch, but it was only good enough to tie her for third place this year. Heytens soared to a mark of 28 and one half inches. Mary Haasl claimed second place with a jump of 24 inches. Kate Darnell also managed 23.5 inches to tie for third overall.
In previous seasons athletes ran a course of shuffles, sprints, and backpeddles. This year the path was altered so it is impossible to compare past times to this years'. But the freshman phenom Heytens bested the field again clocking in at 26.37 seconds. Sophomore Kalli Zimmerman and Junior Kate Darnell tied for second with a time of 26.50 seconds. Alexander found her way into the top three for the second time with a 27.03 second effort.
All told it was a terrific day for the Rebels as new records were set in every category. Hopefully this is a harbinger of what the basketball season holds. Tryouts begin on Monday!
