Men's Soccer Gets 2nd Win In A Row

September 22, 2010
By Ryan Murdock of Raytown South High School

What a night!  The Raytown South varsity soccer team rallied to defeat Fort Osage 2-1 in penalty kicks on Tuesday night.  The Cardinals followed up a spirited performance last Thursday with a heart-stopping game on Tuesday night.

After dominating the entire first half of play, the Cardinals failed to find the back of the net and went into halftime tied 0-0.  When the second half started, the Cardinals were a step slow and Fort Osage began to get the run of play.  In the 55th minute, Fort Osage struck with a low shot that snuck just inside the left post and the Indians had a 1-0 lead.  It would stay that way until less than 10 minutes remained in the game.  Beshoy Rezek was able to win a 50/50 ball and poke it forward to Irvin Ortiz who finished a beautiful shot right in the corner to tie the score 1-1.

The two teams exchanged chances late in regulation and throughout overtime but neither team could get the game-winner.  That's when the game went to PK's and Ray-South's Alberto Beltramello came up with 3 huge saves in PK shootout.  Alberto gave the Cardinals a chance to win and Tylor Kraus answered the call by pounding his PK into the upper right of the net.  Also making their PK's were Chris Lopez, Gerson Turcios, and Irvin Ortiz.

The win moves the Cardinals to 3-5 on the season but more importantly pushes them to 2-0 in conference play.  It is the first time the Cardinals have won at Fort Osage in 5 years.  Congrats on the win!

Next up for the Cardinals is another undefeated conference team, Winnetonka on Thursday night at home.  We really need all the support we can get.  The Varsity game will start at 6:30.

Sidenote:  The JV team also took down Fort Osage.  Their score was 5-2.  Cody Morrissey scored four times and Nick Nothnagel added the other as the Cards improved to 2-4 on the season.  Assists were tallied by Austin Hornbostel, Tyler Schmitt and Mikey Keightly.
