Home » Girls' Soccer NewsLady Cards Shock RaytownMay 7, 2010 By Ryan Murdock of Raytown South High SchoolThe girls soccer team took a giant leap forward on Tuesday night, playing their best game of the season and defeating archrival Raytown 1-0 at Raytown. For most of the game the Cardinals outplayed the Bluejays and ended the game with a 17-8 shots advantage. Its the first win against Raytown for the Lady Cardinals in four years and it comes against a Raytown squad that was ranked #9 in the Western Missouri Regional poll. The Cards played the first half with the wind and controlled the run of play most of the first half but were unable to capitilize and went into halftime tied 0-0. After a spirited halftime, senior leaders Samantha Woodward, Amy Mack, and Megan Vaughn all stepped up their games and really ignited the Cardinals who played even better against the wind. Raytown was limited to just 2 shots on goal in the second half thanks to tremendous defense by Katie Blevins, Katie Miller, Amy Mack, Heather Howard, Aspen Juarez, and Samantha Kreissler. After peppering the Raytown goal with shots and near goals, Raytown South finally broke through in the 73rd minute on a goal by Samantha Woodward. The senior captain of the Cards received a nice through ball from Ashley Chandler and snuck a shot by a screened Raytown keeper into the side netting for her 13th goal of the season. That goal would hold up as Raytown South moved to .500 for the season at 8-8. They have now won 3 in a row and will look for a 4th straight victory Thursday against North Kansas City.
