Cardinals dominate Cougars
October 4, 2013By Kennedy Johnson of Raytown South High School
Offense sells tickets and Defense wins championships. That is the system that the Cardinals are promoting in 2013 season. The game versus the Hickman Mills Cougars got off to a fast start. Fans has just sat down when the Cardinals took the ball to the endzone in six plays with Jasir Cox going over from 8 yds. out. Patrick Walton's pass to Jeremiah Bell on the 2 pt. conversion was good.
On the kick-off the special forces team jarred the ball loose and recovered the ball at the 27 yd. line of Hickman. On the next play, Walton hooked up with Michael Cleaves on a pass for the touchdown. Hickman went three plays and out. The Cardinals took the ball down the field on runs by Reaud Hall and Jasir Cox. Another Walton pass to Michael Cleaves moved the ball inside the five yd. line. Cox ran the ball over for another TD. The PAT kick was blocked. End of the first quarter had the Red Birds up 20-0.
The defensive pressure did not let up the next quarter. The Cougars went backwards on their next possession. Reaud Hall intercepted a screen pass and returned the ball to the 5 yd. line. The Cardinals found themselves on the doorstep again. Hall carried the ball over for the TD on the next play. The 2-pt. run failed, Cardinals lead 26-0.
The Cougars ran three plays and the Cardinals tackled the punter before he could punt. This set up a short TD run by Patrick Walton on the roll out pass. Michael Cleaves ran in the 2-pt. conversion and the lead was 34-0 at half-time.
The second half started with the Cougars returning the kick-off 85 yds. for a touchdown. The Cardinals stuffed the 2-pt. run, Hickman was on the board. The Cardinals offense went back to work after John Burnett returned the kick-off to mid-field. Passes to Michael Cleaves for 25 yds. and to Jeremiah Bell for 11 yds. were a good start, however a fumbled pitch and a sack of the Cardinals QB left the Red Birds in a punting situation. Tyler Jones boomed the ball from the 50 yd. line down to the one yard line. Two plays later, Reaud Hall tackled the ball carrier in the endzone for a safety. 36-8 was the score in the 3rd quarter.
The Cardinals took the short kick-off and went right down the field on the legs of Markarios Page and Jasir Cox. The next play from the 9 yd. line was a sweep by Michael Cleaves, Touchdown, his second of the day. Score: SMS - 42 Hickman - 6.
The B-team played the rest of the fourth quarter as the Hickman Mills team did not have enough players to play the B-game. The defense held the Cougars offense in check for the rest of the game. A long pass was completed by Hickman on the last play. Javonte Brock made a touchdown saving tackle to end the game.
The team travels to Chittwood Stadium next week to take on the Raytown Central Ravens. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 pm. See you there!
