FUTURE CARDINALS - RSMS
Cardinals blank Yoekum 23-0
October 2, 2013By Kennedy Johnson of Raytown South High School
After watching the first quarter, you thought the game between the Cardinals and Pirates was pretty boring. Both teams seemed kind of "sluggish" with neither team mounting any kind of offense. The best drive by the Cardinals early in the second quarter stalled at the Pirate 25 yd. line as the fourth down pass was intercepted.
The Pirates offense wasn't going anywhere either. The Red Rage defense stopped two runs and sacked the QB on 3rd down forcing another punt. That where Makarios Page and the special teams struck the first blow of the game. Taking the punt from the Yeokum 45 yd. line and getting a key block by Michael Cleaves, Markarios made two tacklers miss and scappered into the endzone for the early lead. The 2 pt. conversion pass from Patrick Walton to Jasir Cox made the early score 8-0 for the Cardinals.
Half-time! Adjustments were made and the defense was asked to step up again in the 2nd half.
The 3rd quarter had both team's offenses moved the ball but then the drive stalled out. Late in the 3rd QTR, Yeokum bounced back by driving the ball down the field dispite two fumbles of their own that they recovered. A long pass and couple of sustained runs by the QB got the ball near the Cardinals' 30 yd. line, then the Red Rage defense struck. Four plays were stuffed as Cameron Jones, Lewis Caples, Micheal Cleaves and Jeremiah Bell shut down the run.
Bingo - Cardinals went back on offense and a couple of nice runs by Reaud Hall and Jasir Cox moved the ball near mid-field. Patrick Walton completed a screen pass to Michael Cleaves who took the ball 25 yds into Pirate territory. Jasir Cox ran the Trap play from 19 yds out for the TD. Mr. Cox also passed the ball to Cleaves for the 2 pt. conversion, 16-0 Red birds early in the 4th QTR.
The Pirates started their 4th quarter with the ball on their 20 yd. line. The ball was snapped over the QB head where he was sacked. The next pass fell incomplete. Third down and 22 for the Pirates. Lightning then struck again - this time in the form of Michael Cleaves. The outside linebacker grabbed the tipped pass at the 44 yd. line and sprinted past the Yeokum players into the endzone for the defensive score. Second interception of the year returned for a TD by the defense. Tyler Jones added the extra point kick and the Cardinals lead 23-0.
The last Pirate drived stalled and the Cardinals took over and ran out the clock. The team moves to 3-0 on the year, now the half-way point in the season. The last home game for the Cardinals will be next week vs. Hickman Mills.
The B-team's game resembled the earlier play of the A-game. The offenses would move but the drive would stall out. Good runs by Kelyn Bolton and Lundon Roulette would get the Cardinals into Yeokum territory only to have the drive end on downs.
Early in the 2nd Quarter, the Cardinal signal caller, Jamar Madge kept the ball and scampered 55 yds. to paydirt. The 2 pt. conversion failed and with 5:43 left till half-time, Ray-South lead 6-0.
The defense stiffened and a couple of QB sacks pinned the Pirates inside their 30 yd. line - the 4th QB sack gave the Cardinals the ball in great field position. Kelyn Bolton carried the next handoff to the Pirates 2 yd. line. The next play, Madge carried the ball over from the left side to give the Cardinals a 12-0 lead as the 2 pt. conversion run failed.
The rest of the game was played mostly on the Pirate side of the field. The Cardinals stayed with the running attack. The legs of Bolton, Roulette, Donnie Locke and James Mitchell moved the ball. However the drives would stall as the Pirates Defense stiffened near the goal line and ball was turned over on downs. The Red Rage defense held and the second shut-out of the day was complete. The B-team is now 3-0 on the season. Rival games are on the horizon with Hickman Mills, Raytown Central and Raytown games, all being played in October. Wear your red and come see the boys play.
